Gatcombe thwarted by the weather
The Land Rover Gatcombe Horse Trials fell victim to the adverse weather conditions which covered the country at the Easter weekend. Only l00 horses and riders able to compete on Thursday, the first day, out of some 600 horses and ridersentered overthe three days.
However, some 58 youngsters aged 14 - 16 years competed in the two Pony Trial classes successfullyon the Thursday, with the honours going to young Eliza Stoddart on her mother's Killacoran Blue on 28.1, with Eliza Sangster on Irish Blue Chip in second on 31.9 and Laura Richie- Bland with Russellstown Prince in third on 35.7.
David Doel took pole position in the second Trial on Silver Fox III on 26.9 with Lucy Loughton on Nobless in second on 28.1 and Ella McEwen on Catherston Nutsafe in third on 30.3. Whilst Anthea Bleekman (daughter of event rider Clarissa/Strachan )took fourth in both Trials on Nightgirl 002 and Mayflower on 36.9. Andrew Heffernam and Pebbly Aga Khan won the only Novice section to run that day on 31.40 from Nicky Roncoroni and Mistral de Blondel on 33.40 and Jennifer Slocock with Happy Flyer.
