£1.8m boost for Stroud Hospital
HEALTHCARE at Stroud Hospital is to be propelled into the 21st Century thanks to a £1.8 million cash injection.
Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust is pledging the money to upgrade the operating theatre and endoscopy department at the site.
David Miller, chairman of the Stroud hospitals' league of friends, was delighted at this week's announcement.
"It's superb news for the Stroud hospitals and for the Stroud community," he said.
"It's going to give us a state of the operating theatre and endoscopy unit that will serve us into the future.
"We must pay tribute to the Gloucestershie PCT for spending this money and giving great endorsement to Stroud Hospital."
Work is due to get underway later this year and will take between four and six months to complete.
The PCT wants to make sure that as much surgery as possible remains in Stroud while the improvements are carried out.
A state-of-the-art mobile surgical unit will be brought in and the PCT hope to confirm a local site for this in the near future.
However, residents who would have had their surgery requiring overnight stays at Stroud General will be treated at either Gloucestershire Royal or Cirencester Hospital.
And patients undergoing endoscopy will have their procedures performed in Cirencester.
Jan Stubbings, chief executive of Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust, said:
"These major improvement works at Stroud General Hospital are really good news and will bring significant benefits to patients when completed.
"We would ask local people to bear with us while the modernisation work is carried out.
"We will be working hard to keep disruption to a minimum for patients and ensure that they continue to have access to high quality services during this temporary period."
NHS staff who provide surgery and endoscopy services at Stroud will continue to provide services to patients during the temporary arrangements.
