Fairground rides could be scrapped
FAIRGROUND rides at this year's Nailsworth Christkindl could be scrapped because of problems with anti-social behaviour at the last event.
Town mayor Norman Kay said the town council and others groups which organise the evening want to make it more traditional while still providing rides for small children.
Speaking to the town council he said: "At the latest police meeting members of Stonehouse Town Council raised similar concerns about their goodwill evening.
"We wondered whether these problems were linked in any way to the increase in fairground rides over the past few years."
Speaking to the SNJ after the meeting, he said police needed to disperse a group of young people from Old Market at the latest event.
"I don't think anything major happened," he said.
"It was just drinking and general horsing around, many of the young people come from outside of Nailsworth.
"At a recent youth forum meeting even the youngsters said we needed to have a rethink of the evening.
"Also some of the shopkeepers weren't bothering to open up in the evening, so we're really keen to attract them back."
A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said the key concern at all goodwill evenings was the safety of those attending.
"We will be liaising closely with Nailsworth Town Council regarding the policing arrangements, as we do every year," he said.
"We want to keep anti-social behaviour to an absolute minimum so people are able to enjoy themselves on the night.
"We will obviously seriously consider any plan or idea that will help us achieve this goal."
The Christkindl evening is organised by Nailsworth Chamber of Trade.
